Volkswagen Logo Changes and Redesign

Volkswagen most recently changed their logo in spring 2020. The new version is not substantially different; it contains the same basic idea but with modernized styling. Basically, the design team took away the 3D rounding effect that had accentuated the logo since the early 2000s and flattened it for a simpler, 2D, digital-friendly look. The blue and white colors have also been refreshed thanks to a new, deep blue tone.

The first production vehicle to be outfitted with the redesigned logo will likely be the MkVIII Golf, a model unlikely to be released in the United States. However, we will be getting a sporty, high-performance oriented variation with standard all-wheel drive.

What does the new Volkswagen logo look like?

The primary concept of the Volkswagen logo still centers around melding together a V and a W. This combination has come to represent one of the most recognizable brands on the planet, so it makes sense that they don’t want to change it up too much. The new design is both a symbol and a trademark.

Why did Volkswagen change its logo?

The new design is a refreshed, minimalist, digital-first re-imagination of the logo, reducing the look to the merged V, W and surrounding circle; i.e., the essential elements. As a result, it can be used extremely flexibly. The logo displays easily on digital devices and applications; it functions well whether on small scales such as a smartwatch or phone, as well as on large structures such as factories.

Apple switched its icons over to this sort of simplified, flattened design back in 2013. Android soon followed suit. It seems that the automotive world is finally catching up.
