Trailer Brake Laws

If the gross weight of your trailer or semitrailer is over 3,000 pounds, it must be equipped with trailer brakes when operated on a highway. If the towed vehicle is over 5,000 pounds, the brakes must be configured so that they automatically apply if the trailer disconnects.

If the trailer is between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds, they’re required to have brakes on one wheel on each side. If the trailer is over 5,000 pounds, it must be equipped with brakes on all wheels.
