Unique Valentine’s Day 2020 Activities in Elgin, IL
Valentine’s Day is approaching fast this year, as it always seems to do once February kicks into gear. If you have a significant other and you’re neurotic like us, that means your mind is starting to race about what to do for celebration.
While there’s nothing wrong with the classic romantic meal paired to a bottle of wine, restaurants can be awfully crowded, and prices can be steep. Furthermore, it’s just a bit unoriginal; if you’ve been with someone for a while, you may find yourself doing the same things to celebrate year after year.
With this in mind, we decided to search out some particularly memorable Valentine’s Day 2020 events in Elgin. Read on to find how to spend a unique V-Day with your loved one.
Valentine’s Day at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center
- Where? Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Dr., Elgin IL
- When? Friday, Feb. 14. Special Valentine’s Workshop from 11 am to 1 pm. Nature Center open hours from 10 am to 4 pm.
Admittedly, this event seems to be primarily for children, but we don’t believe there’s an age limit. And what’s more memorable than awkwardly partaking in an event not intended for your demographic?
In honor of the holiday, the Nature Center at Hawthorne Hill will be hosting a few specially-themed activities. These include the creation of Valentine’s Days cards (ideas and supplies will be provided). Attendees will also have the chance to learn about how animals show affection to one another through activities like building nests, dancing and singing. Just note that if you are sending your kids, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Awakenings presents Artwork by the late Kurt Taecker
- Where? Awakenings Project, 164 Division St. #415, Elgin IL
- When? Valentine’s Weekend (14th through 16th) – from 10 am until 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, and noon until 3 pm on Sunday
Another option is to fill your Valentine’s weekend with art. Awakenings is hosting a retrospective showcase of the works of late artist Kurt Taecker. The exhibition will take place in the lobby of Wentz Hall at North Central College.
This event is going on each day of the weekend, so even if you don’t make it out on the “Day of Hearts” itself, it could be a possible trip for later on. Note that Sunday will also feature a closing reception with refreshments and reminiscences about the weekend.
