Does a performance vehicle have to be one that is out of your price range? Volkswagen has always held that the hot hatch is the perfect solution, and things are only getting more potent every year. The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI now has a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque for all trim levels. It’s been trimmed down to just the S, SE and Autobahn grades, each of which can be paired with either the six-speed manual transmission or six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic, allowing you to choose your preferred driving experience.
Standard performance features offer obvious appeal for those who are already Golf GTI fans, but the model also receives improvements to infotainment, style and overall convenience. Despite its simple styling, there’s a bold heart to the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
|2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder||6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment||LED taillights and DRLs|
|220 horsepower||Automatic headlights with rain sensor||Refreshed 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels|
|258 lb-ft of torque||Stop-start feature||Ambient and footwell lighting|
|Six speed-manual or six-speed DSG automatic||Rearview camera||Clark plaid seating|
Automakers who fail to make annual changes may also fail to make sales. Volkswagen knows this, which is why there’s always something new for its models. For the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI, the infotainment system is now upgraded to a 6.5-inch touchscreen, up from a 5-inch touchscreen, and the premium system is now sized up to an 8-inch screen.
A new feature that will help balance fuel economy and power even more is the start-stop engine function, which stops the engine when the vehicle isn’t moving, but automatically restarts it when you hit the gas. This is particularly helpful in heavy traffic situations with frequent stop-and-go traffic.
Other standard features for the 2018 VW Golf GTI include LED taillights, foglights and DRLs, a rearview camera, automatic headlights with rain sensor, a leather-wrapped multi-function sport steering wheel, ambient lighting and Car-Net App-Connect with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
