Under the hood, the VW Tiguan has a 2.0L Turbo engine, while the Nissan Rogue has a 1.5L VC-Turbo®. Both engines offer similar outputs; in fact, they each produce at least 220 lb-ft of torque! With that much torque on board, climbing steep hills or towing a small rowboat will be easy as pie.
Helping propel you forward with ease is an 8-speed automatic transmission in the VW Tiguan. On the other hand, the Rogue has a standard Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission), which enables smooth gear shifting but may not be as dynamic as the 8-speed on the Volkswagen.
Customize Your Drive
Both SUVs offer available all-wheel drive (AWD). First up is the Nissan Rogue and its Intelligent AWD system, which can enhance traction. Plus, the Rogue presents drivers with the option to switch up the ride with five drive modes.
The VW Tiguan takes it up a notch with 4MOTION® AWD. Accessed through an interior turn dial, drivers can switch among four different available AWD modes to find the one that fits their current travel needs:

- On-Road Mode
- Off-Road Mode
- Off-Road Custom Mode
The VW Tiguan has the advantage of an Off-Road Custom Mode. This makes space for drivers to personalize where the engine power goes when they’re traveling on not-so-distinct roadways. For example, this would be a great mode to utilize when traveling on sandy shorelines or wooded paths. The Rogue lacks a similar drive mode.

If you plan to spend a lot of time behind the wheel, you’ll need the coziest SUV possible. Both the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue have the creature comforts you crave; however, which one makes more of them standard?
Bring Along the Whole Fam
One of the biggest differences between the VW and the Nissan is their seating capacities. The Rogue can seat up to five people, while the VW Tiguan accommodates up to seven passengers. So, 6-person or growing families will enjoy the added appointments of the VW Tiguan. Drivers with a smaller family or younger couples may prefer the smaller Nissan.

What the VW Tiguan has that the Nissan Rogue doesn’t is standard black roof rails. These rails add convenience because they provide another way to carry cargo, especially your more adventuresome gear like a kayak, a mountain bike, or a cargo box.
You can upgrade your Rogue to have roof rails as well; however, you can choose any VW Tiguan trim and enjoy this amenity.
