Volkswagen Atlas vs. Honda Pilot: A Quick Comparison

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas and 2025 Honda Pilot are both mid-size, three-row SUVs designed for growing families.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas offers Elgin-area drivers more cargo capacity and a more refined interior, thanks to its comfortable and capable German-engineered platform. Meanwhile, the Honda Pilot is a versatile option.

This Volkswagen SUV comparison compares the key differences between these two popular family options.

Volkswagen Atlas vs. Honda Pilot: Pricing & Value

The 2025 Honda Atlas is available in six variants, from the $40,200 Sport trim to the fully loaded Black Edition with an MSRP of $54,580.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in five trims, beginning with the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas SE, which starts at just $38,200—$2,000 less than the Pilot.

With a starting price of just $53,205, the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium R-Line is also better priced than the Pilot, and it offers features that aren’t available on the Honda, including:

  • 21-inch machined alloy wheels (versus 20-inch on the Honda)
  • R-Line exterior styling
  • Massage front seats with 4-way lumbar
  • Harman Kardon® premium audio system
  • Overhead View Camera (Area View)

Drivetrains & Fuel Economy

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox and your choice of FWD or AWD. It produces 269 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque.

Honda’s Pilot is driven by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 285 HP and 262 lb-ft of torque. It’s also available in FWD or AWD versions via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The Honda is rated 19/25/21 MPG city/highway/combined in the AWD trim.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas has a slight edge on mileage, with ratings of 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway in AWD trim.

Seating & Cargo Volume

While the Honda Pilot seats up to 8 people, the Volkswagen Atlas seats 7. Thanks to its taller, square profile, the VW has the Pilot’s leg and shoulder room beat, which increases comfort for rear-seat passengers. The Atlas shines in cargo volume, though, offering 56 cubic feet behind the second row compared to just 49 cubic feet in the Honda.

Even with all three rows of seating in use, the Volkswagen Atlas offers 21 cubic feet of cargo volume compared to just 19 in the Honda.

Safety & Technology

Both the 2025 Honda Pilot and 2025 Volkswagen Atlas feature Apple Carplay® and Android AutoTM connectivity, as well as a range of driver safety aids. The radar and camera-based systems in both vehicles offer the safety and convenience that comes with:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Blind-spot Monitoring
  • Forward Emergency Braking and Collision Avoidance

With a host of state-of-the-art driver aids, both of these modern vehicles offer drivers impressive safety and ease of driving.
