How Easy Open Works on the Volkswagen Atlas
The Volkswagen Atlas offers a Hands-Free Easy Open trunk feature, also called the hands-free liftgate, letting you unlock and open the trunk with a kick of your foot instead of a button or fob press. How Easy Open Works on the Volkswagen Atlas
With your key fob in your pocket, purse, or hand and within range of the vehicle, swing your foot under the center of the rear bumper. The trunk should unlock and swing open on its own, no button or fob press needed. Vehicle ignition should be off before you try it.

If Easy Open Isn’t Responding
The sensor sometimes needs a second attempt to pick up the motion. Try waving your foot again, or shift slightly to the left or right of the bumper’s center rather than directly beneath the badge or hitch receiver. Confirm the key fob is within range and the vehicle is unlocked, and check that nothing, like a trailer hitch or cargo rack, is blocking the sensor’s view.
Still not working after a few tries? The trunk can always be opened with the button on the key fob or the switch on the liftgate itself. If Easy Open consistently won’t trigger, our service team can check the sensor.
